To honour internationally recognised documentary filmmaker, Ms Robin Anderson, an annual competitive film festival for secondary school filmmakers has been established and will be launched in late November 2008.

The Robin Anderson Film Awards (the Awards) is open to students who are enrolled in secondary school in 2008 and offers three sections for entry: a junior students section (Years 7-10), a senior students section (Years 11-12) and an open section (7 - 12). Work can be submitted under the following three categories.

1. Fiction category which includes drama, music video, thriller, or film that does not relate to true and factual events.

2. Non-fiction category which includes documentaries and film dealing with real events and real people.

3. Digital Media which can include any genre using appropriate computer programs.

4. Super Sweet Short Film is any film lasting 40 seconds in duration.

Works will be judged and awarded under the following categories:

• Best Fiction Film - Junior Category
• Best Non-Fiction Film - Junior Category

• Best Fiction Film - Senior Category
• Best Non-Fiction Film - Senior Category

• Digital Media - Open category

• Super Sweet Short Film - Open category

• The Robin Anderson Prize - overall prize for best film, judged from all works submitted in both the junior and senior sections.

Craft prizes are also to be awarded in the following areas:

• Best Acting
• Best Cinematography
• Best Editing
• Best Composition

Awards and Prizes
Each filmmaker or filmmaking team will receive a certificate of participation.

Special commendation will be given to those works that are considered to be of a high standard.

It is anticipated that the nominees for the six major awards will have their film screened in full at the awards festival. in late November 2008. A montage of other films’ highlights will be constructed and screened to give a brief glimpse of the entries in each category.

Prizes for the filmmakers in each category will include an iPod and non-linear editing software. Other prizes include entry to The Australian Film, Television and Radio School’s SummerSkills program. Masterclass and tuition at Spectrum Films.

The winner of The Robin Anderson Film Prize for Best Film will receive a mini digital video camera to the value of $1,500.

The School of the winning entry will hold the Robin Anderson Film Awards Trophy and have their name on the trophy.

Super Sweet Short Filmmaking Workshops at COFA
The aim of the Robin Anderson Film Awards is to create an initiative that promotes and encourages young student filmmakers by offering them industry based advice and assistance. Due to the generosity of Robin’s filmmaker colleagues we are able to offer at COFA, workshop days for those students and teachers in the Inner West who are interested in learning about making films.

The lecture and workshop days for 2008 are a (date to be announced) . It is planned that the day will include a lectures on filmmaking technique and then workshops including documentary filming, script writing, filming drama and editing, including students viewing and analyzing other successful short films. An opportunity to seek advice on student’s own work will be provided.

A film theory workshop for teachers - Cineliteracy will be held at the Art Gallery of NSW. This course will assist teachers in strategies of studying and making film and videos.

Submission Requirements
• Maximum running time of each film including the running of credits to be up to 8 (eight) minutes.

• Format for each submission must be either mini digital videotape or DVD.
Please retain the master copy of your work.
Forward 1 (one) copy of your film only.

• Music composition should be original or cleared by the artist. All music should be acknowledged in the credits. Please refer to the Filmmakers Checklist PDF for more information.

• All entries must have opening and closing credits.

• Works must be submitted with a completed application form and entry fee.

• All films should be in English or English subtitled.

• Submissions must be work that has been produced in 2008.

• Successful entrants will be notified during October 2008 and will be acknowledged   during the Awards night.

• All judging decisions will be final.

Judging of Submissions
Each submission will be judged according to the following two key criteria:

1. Content:
    Strength of the ideas and concepts being expressed in the film; and

2. Style:
    Technical proficiency - how well the film is constructed.

Strength of ideas and concepts relates to how well the ideas are communicated in the film as well as how it may stimulate thought after viewing.

Technical proficiency refers to the skills and expertise in the production and post-production of the film. Basically this means how well you have constructed your film from pre-production to post-production.

Each film needs to balance both considerations in terms of how well it is produced and how well it communicates to a general audience.

Entry Fees
A non-refundable entry fee of $11.00 for each film submitted.

Submission Deadline
Entries close at 5.00 pm on Friday, 26 September 2008.

Entries are to be submitted on either a mini digital videotape or DVD, accompanied by the entry fee and completed entry form.

Posted films must be post-marked by the above deadline of Friday, 26 September 2008.

The forward freight is the responsibility of the filmmaker. The Awards accepts no responsibility for technical damage to films, or for the period of time that the film is in possession of the Awards. Films will not be returned to entrants at the conclusion of the Awards.
